Description: (DD-405) One of the ship's survivors cleans up while awaiting medical attention on board a rescue ship. Rowan was torpedoed and sunk on 11 September 1943, during an engagement with German motor torpedo boats while she was escorting shipping from the Salerno invasion area to Oran, Algeria. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
