Description: Reading the 30 November 1942 issue of Time magazine, which featured Vice Admiral William F. Halsey, Jr. on its cover. Photographed while McCandless' ship, USS San Francisco (CA-38), was returning to the United States for repair of damage received during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, 13 November 1942. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in that battle. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
