6th Chief of Naval Operations: 1 July 1933 – 1 January 1937

 

After years of treaty limitations, isolationism, and reduced budgets, Admiral Standley was called upon to prepare the Navy for World War II.  Appointed only four months after Franklin Roosevelt was inaugurated as President, Standley candidly explained the dire shortages within the fleet and received the President’s support in rebuilding it.
