The Navy’s support of the national space program was a priority.  Throughout the history of the space program, many of its astronauts had drawn from the ranks of the Navy and Marine Corps.  The Apollo 12 mission consisted of a crew made up of all Navy officers.  For every mission, Navy ships and helicopters recovered astronauts and capsules at the end of their flights.
