LST-499 was laid down on 3 September 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 5 November 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Porter W. Kohlmeyer; and commissioned on 10 January 1944.

During World War II, LST-499 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. She was sunk due to enemy action during the invasion on 8 June 1944, and her name was struck from the Navy list on 22 August 1944.
