Caption: The first U.S. naval air ace during World War I. From 18 July 1918 to 24 September 1918, while flying with Royal Air Force Squadron 213, he shot down four enemy aircraft and an observation balloon. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by the United States, the Distinguished Flying Cross by Britain, and was made a member of the French Legion of Honor.
