Description: (Japanese heavy cruiser, 1927) View on the the sunken ship's forecastle, at Kure, Japan, 9 October 1945. She had been hit by air attacks on 24 and 28 July 1945, resulting in her loss. Note the buckled deck plating, caused by a 500-pound bomb that exploded below during the 24 July attack by U.S. Navy carrier aircraft. Twigs around the deck edge are the remains of an attempt to camouflage the ship. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
