During the Exploring Expedition, USS Vincennes, commanded by Lt. Charles Wilkes, becomes the first U.S. Navy ship to reach the Antarctic Continent.

1943

USS Swordfish (SS 193) sinks army cargo ship Myoho Maru, which was part of the Japanese Solomons reinforcement convoy, while USS Greenling (SS 213) damages Japanese cargo ship north of Rabaul.

1951

During the Korean War, landing crafts from USS Horace A. Bass (APD 124) investigate the beaches around Kamak Bay (south west coast of Korea) when one of the crafts carrying frogmen comes under fire from North Korean guerillas, killing two and wounding three.
