Ship's commander officer, LT Walter T. Flynn, USNR, looks out from a pilot house porthole, 9 August 1943. His ship sank German submarine U-521 off the US East Coast on 2 June 1932. Symbol on bridge face commemorates the event. Note riveted plating, and porthole wiper.
