Title: USS WILMINGTON (PG-8)
Caption: Steaming up the Amazon River near the Peruvian village of Iquitos during the ship's two month exploratory cruise of the Amazon River, 1899. USS WILMINGTON stopped at Leticia, Brazil, to request permission to continue the voyage into Peru. Permission was granted, and then official calls were exchanged in Iquitos. Iquitos is over 2000 miles upstream from the mouth of the Amazon.
