William F. Lukes was born on 19 February 1847 in Niderbergdorf, Bohemia (which is now part of the Czech Republic). He enlisted in the US Navy from Tientsin, China and served onboard USS Colorado in Company D as part of the 1871 Korean Expedition. During the capture of the Han River forts on 11 June 1871, Lukes received a severe cut over his head, but continued to fight. For his bravery on this occasion, Lukes was awarded the Medal of Honor. He later obtained the rank of Seaman. William F. Lukes died on 17 December 1923 at Los Angeles, California.
