Lieutenant, Confederate States Navy, (in service, 1861-1865)

Edwin Maffitt Anderson, a Georgian, entered the Confederate States Navy as a Master's Mate in October 1861 and was appointed a Midshipman in the following month. Following service on CSS Savannah, he was sent overseas. In August 1862, he joined CSS Alabama in the Azores as she was being placed into service as a warship. Midshipman Anderson remained in Alabama through her entire career as a commerce raider, and was wounded in the 19 June 1864 engagement with USS Kearsarge. After Alabama sank, he was rescued by the British yacht Deerhound and taken to England. On his way back to the Confederacy, he met the blockade runner CSS Owl and joined her as an Acting Master. Anderson was promoted to Lieutenant by the end of the Civil War, while still serving in Owl. After the conflict, he resided in Savannah.
