Bennett, James Gordon, Jr.
James Gordon Bennett, Jr., son of the successful publisher and editor of the New York "Herald", was born in New York City on 10 May 1841. Educated in the United States and France, he later worked for his father's newspaper. Young Bennett was an accomplished yachtsman and was briefly a U.S. Revenue Marine Third Lieutenant during the Civil War, commanding his yacht Henrietta while she was in Federal service. In 1867 he took over the "Herald", vigorously pursuing greater circulation with sensational stories, famous writers and fresh news. He also sponsored special undertakings that would generate popular stories, among them the 1879-1881 Arctic expedition of the steamer Jeannette. Beginning in the later 1870s Bennett primarily resided in France, but continued to manage the "Herald" via telegraph communications. Noted for his rich lifestyle, James Gordon Bennett remained active in journalism as late as the World War I years. He died at Beaulieu, France, on 14 May 1918.
