Caption: This emblem was adopted in 1968. Its symbolism is as follows: Eagle, atop a ship's helm: represents the United States, and the strength, vigilance and determination of the U.S. Navy. The building, within the helm, is the chapel of Duke University, which is the most significant landmark in Durham, North Carolina. The crossed Navy and Marine Corps swords symbolize the unity of the amphibious team. The ship's name, projected from the sea, represents the new horizon in amphibious warfare.
