Caption: Rear admiral Edward Simpson, U.S.N. who served as president of the naval institute in 1886-1888 and authorized several volumes on naval ordnance. Born in New York, 3 March 1824, midshipman 11 February 1840, passed 11 July 1846, master 10 July 1854, Lieutenant 18 April 1855, Lieutenant commander 16 July 1862 received the surrender of the confederate fleet on Tombigbee River after the fall of mobile. Commander 3 March 1865, captain 15 August 1870, commodore 26 April 1878, rear admiral 9 February 1884, retired list 3 March 1866 and died in Washington, DC. 1 December 1888.
