NH 64701-KN Insignia: USS RALEIGH (LPD-1)

Insignia: USS RALEIGH (LPD-1)
Title: Insignia: USS RALEIGH (LPD-1)
Caption: This insignia adopted in 1962. The basic design of the shield, scroll, and bandeau are taken from the coat of arms of Sir Walter Raleigh. The same design, but with a stag as crest instead of a helmet, has long been used by the city of Raleigh, North Carolina, as its coat of arms. The oak tree is also symbolic of the city of Raleigh and appears on the official seal of that city. Thus the emblem is symbolic of both the city and the man from which this ship received her name. The anchor represents the sea and relates the emblem specifically to the USS RALEIGH.
