January 1990 - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

From January 13 to 25, 1990, USS Dewey (DDG-45) crewmembers worked to renovate the Sharah Humanitarian School and the Dubai Handicapped School during a port visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The fifty-five man team was led by Lieutenant Villar-Gosalvez. Work included bricklaying, carpentry, and painting. The idea originated from the wife of the American Consul-General in Dubai who enlisted the help of the visiting U.S. Navy ships. Villar-Gosalvez stated, "We received help from the world during Hurricane Hugo, and this is our way of paying back." As one crewmember, Dennis A. Guinn, said to a local news reporter, "People here have been really friendly, and it's a great city to come back to."
