USS Lake Champlain (CVS-39) reached Valencia, Spain, to assist in flood rescue work.  The American ambassador to Spain, John Davis Lodge, requested Lake Champlain to provide assistance for the rescue operations.   The ship's Sikorsky H-19 "Chickasaw" helicopters undertook numerous rescue missions, and the ship's crew assisted in battling the mud that followed the disaster.  USS Washtenaw County (LST-1166) and USS Thuban (AKA-19) also took part in the rescue.
