Tours and Community Engagement

BOOKING A SCHOOL TOUR

If you would like to schedule a school tour for your class (grades 1 through 8), please complete a reservation form here.   This includes, private, home-school, and alternative school students.

 

Note:   We require advance notice of two-weeks to book your tour. Tours must be a minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 60 people.

 

All of our school tour content is aligned with District of Columbia Common Core State Standards for English, Language Arts, Science, Mathematics and Art.

  • Programs are designed to be presented to one class group of approximately 25 students at a time and are limited to one topic per day.
  • Program length is 50 minutes per class and includes an activity.
  • We offer these programs Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 9:00am and 10:30am

 

BOOKING A “NON-SCHOOL” GROUP TOUR

“Non-school” tours are available upon advance request for all ages and groups including, day camps, scout groups, reunion groups, Honor Flights, and naval commands.  Tours of the museum can also focus on the needs of the group.  

General Tours at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy

  •  Last from 60 to 90 minutes.
  •  Covers the museum, artifacts, and how they tie to Navy History.
  • Can be tailored to the group.

 

SPECIALIZED TOURS

Walking Tours of the Washington Navy Yard

  • Last from 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Covers the historic buildings on the Washington Navy Yard
  • Ordnance of the Washington Navy Yard
  • Learn about the cannons on display in the Washington Navy Yard.

Honor Flights

  • Last from 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Covers historic content in the main Museum building (Bldg. 76)

Sailor 360

  • Last from 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Covers the museum, artifacts, and how they tie to Naval History.
  • Can be tailored to the group.

 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Museum staff also actively engages audiences outside the walls of the Navy Yard within the diverse communities it serves by supporting

  • living history programs
  • community festivals
  • STEM fairs
  • College and university volunteer fairs civic groups and other non-profit agencies such as churches, senior homes, and community centers
  • provides speakers to speak to outside groups on various topics of Naval History
  • virtual learning opportunities
