Barbara (SP-704) a wooden hulled motorboat constructed in 1910 at Dorchester, Mass., by H. H. Linnell was acquired by the Navy on 11 June 1917 on free lease from Mr. Arnold Hoffman, of Barrington, R.I., and was placed in service at New London, Conn., on 21 June 1917, Quartermaster 1st Class Arthur B. Homer in charge. Assigned to the section patrol, she served as a cargo and dispatch vessel in the waters around New London. After a year of duty, she was placed out of service in June 1918. Barbara was returned to her owner on 10 January 1919, and her name was struck from the Navy list that same day.
