Philippine Invasion, 1941-1942.
Title: Philippine Invasion, 1941-1942.
Caption: General Jonathan Wainwright broadcasts his surrender message, following the capture of Corregidor by the Japanese, May 1942. Copied from the Japanese book: "Philippine Expeditionary Force," published in 1943. Original Japanese caption: "(The following excerpts of General Wainwright's surrender speech) By the powers vested in me, I order General William Sharp, Commanding General of American-Filipino Forces on Mindanao and Visayans, to instruct his men to surrender. On the 6th, I met Lieutenant General Homma, the Japanese Commander, and discussed the terms of the surrender. He told me that he would not accept any proposals of surrender unless all troops under my command capitulate. In the interest of humanity it is useless to continue to resist, so I have decided to surrender. All American and Filipino troops will throw down their weapons immediately..."
