Grave of "King Neptune," the Navy Pig.
Title: Grave of "King Neptune," the Navy Pig.
Caption: "King Neptune" (1941-1950), a navy mascot hog, was auctioned and reauctioned at war bond drives around the county from 1942 to 1946, resulting in the sale of some nineteen million dollars worth of bonds. The 700 LB. pig died on 14 May 1950, at the age of ten, and was buried near Anna, in southern Illinois, by his owner, former Navy CPO Don Lingle, a local resident. "King Neptune's grave was moved to its present site in 1959, when a highway was constructed through the old location. The tombstone has become something of a local attraction."
