Petrel IV (S. P. 59)

A small long-winged sea bird which flies far from land.

The fourth Petrel, a motor boat built by Murray & Tregurtha, South Boston, Mass., was acquired by the Navy from E. Pierce 14 May 1917; and commissioned at Boston 18 May 1917.

German submarines were reported off Cape Cod, Mass. during World War I. Petrel operated on patrol against this danger to the area throughout her Naval career. After wartime service and decommissioning, she was returned to her owner 17 April 1918.
