NH 68458 Musket, Flintlock

Musket, Flintlock
Title: Musket, Flintlock
Caption: British naval musket, possibly used by Americans during the Revolution as this specimen was discovered in the New Jersey shore area. The .78 cal. smoothbore barrel, 37" long, is fitted with a front sight but has no bayonet lug as do the longer Brown Bess infantry muskets of this period. The barrel shows a small AR cypher, dating it from the reign of Queen Anne, 1702-14. Heavy brass furniture characteristic of arms made at this time includes an early "dragon" sideplate. This piece still bears many traces of the black paint used to protect sea service muskets from corrosion.
