John W. Chittenden  -- a wooden-hulled non-powered salvage barge built in 1900 by A. C. Brown, Tottenville, N.Y. -- was purchased on 11 September 1918 from Merritt & Chapman Dredge & Wrecking Co., N.Y., for service in the Third Naval District. She was sold to her previous owner on 15 May 1919.
