Portsmouth was one of the first of the 100 "Maury Gunboats" begun to defend the Virginia-North Carolina coastline. At Gosport (Norfolk) in 1862, almost completed, Portsmouth had to be burned on the stocks when the Navy Yard was evacuated by the Confederates, 10 May.
