On October 4, 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated Haiti.  The humanitarian effort by the United States was led by the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID).   The U.S. Navy immediately dispatched USNS Comfort (T-AH-20) and provided personnel and supplies to areas inaccessible by road.   Other U.S. Navy ships involved:  USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7), USS Mesa Verda (LPD-19), and USS George Washington (CVN-73).  The U.S. Marines provided the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit for assistance.  Operations for the military ended October 21.
