In September 2014, due to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the Department of Defense responded with Operation Unified Assistance, led by he U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  To support this mission, the U.S. Navy arranged for Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB-133) to provide initial engineering support and also deployed U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 tilt rotor-aircraft from Spain to Liberia.   The Naval Medical Research Center also set up two mobile laboratories to assist in the epidemic.  Liberia was finally declared virus free in June 2016.
