NMUSN-5344:   Jeep for USS Henrico (APA-45) display, October 2023.    Jeep is being prepared for removal from the Landing Craft at the Cold War Gallery, Washington Navy Yard, Washington, D.C.   National Museum of the U.S. Navy Photograph Collection.   Note, despite being listed from Henrico, the Landing Craft on display in the Cold War Gallery was constructed from two prior craft.   One, from Key Bridge Marina in Dundalk, Maryland, which was used onboard USS Olgethorpe (AKA-100), NAB Little Creek, and then to USS Rankin (LKA-103).

In 1941, Willys-Overland and Ford joined forces to produce the first military light reconnaissance vehicle.   This quarter 4 x 4 vehicle was nicknamed “Jeep” – sort for General Purpose (G.P.) vehicle – and become indispensable during World War II and the Korean War.  Jeeps reached the Korean battlefront by ship, landing craft, and airplane.  Once ashore, Jeeps carried personnel and cargo and served as general reconnaissance, command, and communication trucks.   Some jeeps even became front-line ambulances.  Shortly after the Korean War, the M38, a Jeep with amphibious capabilities, replaced the original Willys Jeep.    The jeep will be stored at the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Curator Branch, Collection Management Facility, at Richmond, Virginia.
