80-G-285082:  Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, October 24, 1944.   Lieutenant Commander Arthur L. Downing and ARM2 John L. Carver following their return to carrier after successful bombing of Japanese battleship Yamato during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In an SB2C, they dropped two bombs just forward of No.1 gun turret, going in through intense anti-aircraft fire at low altitude.  Left to right:  ARM2C Carver and Lieutenant Commander Downing.  This bombing was probably from aircraft based onboard USS Essex (CV-9).   Yamato was later sunk by U.S. Navy aircraft on April 7, 1945.   Photograph released October 25, 1944.
