80-G-285081:  Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, October 24, 1944.   Lieutenant Commander Arthur L. Downing in his plane having just landed on carrier after successful bombing of Japanese battleship Yamato during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.  This bombing was probably from aircraft based onboard USS Essex (CV-9).   Yamato was later sunk by U.S. Navy aircraft on April 7, 1945.    Photograph released October 25, 1944.  U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.  (2016/03/15).
