Lot 11612-4: Malayan Campaign, December 1941-January 1942. Six-Hundred Japanese Leave Singapore. Symptomatic of the uncertainty of the Far East situation, six-hundred Japanese nationals have left Singapore in the Huso Maru, official evacuation ship sent by the Japanese Government. This, despite the expressed British, American, and Dutch desire to prevent hostilities developing in the Pacific. There are still some thousands of Japanese in Malaya. The 600 evacuees mainly comprised of families – there were 200 children and almost as many women. Internal conditions in Japan were indicated by the attempt to take with them canned foodstuffs and piece goods, even by better-off consular officials.
