Receives the Navy Cross and Distinguished Service Medal for his performance while in command of USS Hammann (DD-412) during the May-June 1942 Battles of Coral Sea and Midway. Hammann was lost on 6 June 1942, during the Midway action. Presenting the awards is Admiral William F. Halsey. Photograph was taken circa October 1942.
