Caption: Merchant Ships: Merchant Marine Service, WWII. U.S. Trains American Youth for Merchant Fleet. A group of apprentice seaman “holystone” of the deck of the U.S. training ship, “American Sailor” as they prepare to join America’s merchant marine fleet now carrying supplies and munitions to United States war fronts. The sailors first sprinkle sand on the wet deck and then push heavy blocks of stone back and forth until the deck is gleaming white.
