Shown, left to right:  Jacques Piccard, Lausanne, Switzerland, one of the original designers and builders of the bathyscaph Trieste; Guisseppe Bunno, Gastellamare, Italy, Piccard’s mechanic assistant; and Earnest Virgil, San Diego, California, a bathyscaph support employee of the Naval Electronics Laboratory, sit on the bow of the bathyscaph just off the coast of Guam as the bathyscaph is being towed to sea to make an ocean dive of 1,000 meters.
