The Farragut-class guided-missile destroyer, USS Luce (DLG-7), was commissioned on May 20, 1961, at Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Quincy, Massachusetts.   Her initial deployments were in the Atlantic and the Caribbean.  In February 1964, she was sent to Cyprus to stand guard due for three weeks due to unrest.   Based out Mayport, Florida, she operated in the Atlantic, Mediterrean, and Caribbean.  In June 1975, Luce was reclassified as guided-missile destroyer DDG-38.  Decommissioned on April 1, 1991, she was sold for scrapping in 1994, which was completed in June 2005.

A model of USS Luce was on display in the "America's Wars in Vietnam" section at the National Museum of the U.S. Navy (Cold War Gallery), Bldg. 70, until 2022.
