Fly Navy
The United States Navy is an institution of both fighters and explorers. When not defending America's shores, the men and women of the U.S. Navy work to solve some of the most challenging scientific issues. In the 1950s and 1960s, that meant getting a human being to the Moon. Adding to this challenge was the fact that the Soviet Union's space program was in the lead. Lending its resources to the American Space program, the Navy helped the United States fulfill President John F. Kennedy's charge of putting a human on the Moon and returning him safety to Earth. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Naval Aviator and Astronaut Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, presented here are art, artifacts, and photographs from the Navy collection of the Navy's role in this major accomplishment.
