80-G-30549: Japanese Navy Type 97 Carrier Attack Plane ("Kate")

80-G-30549:   Pearl Harbor Attack, 7 December 1941.  A Japanese Navy Type 97 Carrier Attack Plane ("Kate") takes off from a carrier as the second wave attack is launched. Ship's crewmen are cheering "Banzai"   This ship is either Zuikaku or Shokaku.  Note light tripod mast at the rear of the carrier's island, with Japanese naval ensign.  Also at NHHC as NH 50603.   National Archives photograph has a Japanese caption (translated) , “The moment at which the Hawaii surprise attack force is about to take off from the carrier…On the faces of those who go forth to conquer and those who send them off there floats only that beautiful smile which transcends death.” (9/22/2015).
