80-G-304846:  Battle for Iwo Jima, February-March 1945. A wave of Fourth Division Marines beginning an attack from the beach at Iwo Jima.  The rugged cliff above made this mighty Japanese emplacement at the foot of Mount Suribachi almost completely impregnable.  This photograph of the wrecked gun was taken on the fifth day of the Iwo Jima struggle.   Photograph released February 24, 1945.  Official U.S. Navy Photograph now in the collections of the National Archives.  (2016/01/19).
