Allied naval gunfire and serial bombing of Brest, France, during the battle for the liberation of the city, resulted in devastation and wreckage.  In the photograph, standing out boldly against a background of destruction is this massive crane.  Germans had planted a charge but did not have the time to blow it, 27 September 1944.  Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.   (2014/10/28).
