26-G-4556:  Sinking of German U-boat, U-853, May  1945.     Two Coast Guard officers examine a life raft blasted to surface in the killing of U-853 off Point Judith, Rhode Island.   The life raft came up with oil and other wreckage after USS Atherton (DE-169), USS Ericsson (DD-440), and the Coast Guard manned frigate USS Moberly (PF-63) trapped the marauder and blasted it with lethal patterns of depth charges.  The officers are Ensign Warren A. Allen, (left) and Lieutenant S.F. Regard, (right).   Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.  (2017/09/05).
