<p>80-G-43657: Sinking of German U-boat, U-405. Lieutenant Charles H. Hutchins, USNR, Commanding Officer of USS Borie (DD 215) who received the Presidential Unit Citation ribbon in recognition of the work of his destroyer, part of a task unit, which included USS Card (CVE-11). He received the Navy Cross at the same time. Hutchins’ vessel came upon two submarines on a dark, stormy night, miles from the other vessels and attacked immediately. The Borie rammed the other and sat astride, pumping shells into her conning tower from every gun that could be manned, from shotgun to big rifles. So close was the range, running from 10 to 40 feet, that even one knife hit was scored on a member of the Nazi gun crew. The submarine sank on November 1, 1943, but the Borie was mortally wounded and had to be abandonded and destroyed the following day. Photograph released November 11, 1943.&nbsp;</p>
