330-PS-9975:  USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599), April 1960.   USS Patrick Henry (SSBN 599), the Navy’s second fleet ballistic missile submarine, will be commissioned on 9 April 1960 at Groton, Connecticut.  The nuclear powered submarine, built by Electric Boat Company of Groton, is 380 feet long and displaces 5,400 tons.  The Patrick Henry, like her sister ship, USS George Washington, will be capable of firing Polaris Fleet Ballistic Missiles from beneath the surface of the ocean over ranges of more than 1,200 miles. Patrick Henry’s launching will mark a construction record for nuclear submarines, less than sixteen months having elapsed since the laying of the keel. The 380-foot, 5,400 ton boat is designed to fire solid-fueled Polaris ballistic missiles from submerged positions. It will be the seventh atomic submarine launcing by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation, which ushered in the age of nuclear propulsion in 1954 with the launching of USS Nautilus.
