LC-DIG-PGA-03057: USS Constitution, February 28, 1815. War of 1812, U.S. Navy frigate, USS Constitution, towing captured HBM Cyane, February 28, 1815. Print represents the capture of the British ship. Captain Charles Stewart engaged Cyane, under the command of Captain Gordon Falcon, off the Madeira Islands on February 20, 1815. Lithograph created 1919. On 20 February 1815, during a night engagement off Madeira, Africa, the frigate Constitution, commanded by Captain Charles Stewart captured HMS Cyane and HMS Levant. Of the two vessels, Cyane was captured first and with a prize crew on board Levant was subsequently captured. On 12 March, off Cape Verde Islands, the vessels came under attack by a British squadron under George Collier. Constitution and Cyane escaped while Levant was retaken.
