Hours and Admission

The National Museum of the American Sailor is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. The museum is closed on all federal holidays.

Admission to the museum is free and open to the public.

Driving Directions

The National Museum of the American Sailor is located in Building 42 next to Gate 1 of Naval Station Great Lakes. Naval Station Great Lakes is located approximately 40 miles north of Chicago, 15 miles south of the Wisconsin state line and several miles east of Interstate 94 and U.S. 41.

From the south, follow I-94 (West) toward Wisconsin, and take the Buckley Road (IL-137) exit, turning right (heading east).

From the north, follow I-94 (East) toward Chicago, and take the Buckley Road (IL-137) exit, turning left (heading east).

Continue on Buckley Road (IL-137) for approximately 3 miles. Go under the train overpass at the end of Buckley Road and turn right (north) at the stop light. Turn right at the Visitor’s Entrance immediately after the next stoplight (Sheridan Road and Farragut Avenue). The museum is located in Building 42 of Naval Station Great Lakes on the left (north) side of the Main Gate (Gate 1) behind the Visitor’s Center. Please park in the Visitor’s Parking lot.

The museum is located outside of the Main Gate (Gate 1) of Naval Station Great Lakes. As such, base access is not needed and visitors to the National Museum of the American Sailor do not need visitor passes.

 

Public Transportation

Visitors can reach the Museum via public transportation using Metra’s Union Pacific/North Line. The Great Lakes Metra stop is a half mile south and about a ten-minute walk from the museum.

Parking

A large Visitor Parking Lot is located outside the museum. Parking is free and includes accessible spaces.
