USS Newport News
Caption: The heavy cruiser USS Newport News (CA 148) was built in its namesake city at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. The ship made three deployments to Vietnam to take part in Operation Sea Dragon and provide gunfire support to allied forces. In 1972, Newport News joined a raid on Haiphong to destroy coastal defense and surface-to-air missile (SAM) sites. Sailors dubbed the Norfolk-based cruiser "the Gray Ghost from the East Coast."
