Interviews: Making Deterrent Patrols

Ballistic missile submarines have only one job: to make patrols carrying nuclear missiles, thus deterring enemy attacks. Each sub has two alternating crews (Blue and Gold) to stay at sea as much as possible — up to eight months a year! What do SSBN crews do during a patrol? How does a patrol compare to a fast attack deployment? How many crew members actually know where the submarine is during a patrol? Submariners answer these questions and more in this video.

This video was created for our long-term exhibit, Preserving Peace: The Navy’s Strategic Deterrence Program.
