If you ask submariners to identify the hardest part about submarine service, the answer is almost universal: separation from their families. Patrol schedules mean submariners can miss birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, graduations — even the birth of a child or the death of a family member. In these interviews, SSBN submariners explain why family separation is the hardest part of their jobs.
