Title: L55-15.01.03 Operation Skycatch Polaris missile dummy at testing site
Caption:
Description: Labeled "Operation Skycatch", the U.S. Navy fires and catches multi-ton dummy missiles at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard in Mid-air. The newest phase of development of the launching system for the Polaris Fleet Ballistic Missile, this sequence of photographs show a dummy missile being fired and caught by a huge overhead assembly. This new method permits accurate study of the effects of launch stresses on the dummy which are  structurally identical to operational Polaris missiles. The tests are being conducted by engineers from the Westinghouse Electric Company and Lockheed Missiles and Space Division.
