The Archives is happy to assist you with inquiries regarding submarine history. A visit to the Archives is the best way to conduct your submarine research project! The collection is non-circulating and materials must be viewed on-site. The Archives is open for research by appointment only:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9AM-11:30AM and 1:00PM – 3:30PM
We understand that not everyone is able to visit the facility in person. The staff will conduct limited research for patrons unable to visit. Research requests must be submitted in writing.
To submit research requests or schedule an appointment to visit the Archives, please print out and complete the SFM Research Request Form. The form may be submitted via email, standard mail, or fax.

Research Policy & Instructions:
Requests must be submitted in writing using the SFM Research Request Form and will be processed in the order they are received. Due to the high volume of requests, and small staff size, it may take up to six weeks to receive a reply to your inquiry.
Research requests should be clearly written, with a specific question. General requests for “anything you have on …” will be returned for further refinement and clarification.
Only one historical inquiry or research request may be submitted at a time.
For in-depth projects, or requests requiring the review of numerous documents, the
researcher will need to visit the Archives to conduct their own research.
Before sending a request, check out our guide to Submarine Research Online with links to submarine information sources. You may find that the answer you are looking for is already online, just waiting for you to discover it!
*NOTE* the following items are not available through the Submarine Archives:
Personnel Records ◊ Crew/Sailing Lists ◊ Ship’s Logs ◊ Ship’s Plans
